The Lycée Saint-François-Xavier Students’ Kayak Project:

The Project’s Birth

After discovering sea kayaking at the Varec’h base, the high school students were given the task of organizing a project around this activity. They chose to carry out a social project focusing on inclusion.

After researching the various organizations involved in supporting people with disabilities, the Lycée SFX students contacted the Gabriel Deshayes organization to initiate their project. The initial idea was to introduce kayaking to a group of visually and hearing-impaired people.

The 10 high school students first visited the organization’s premises in Brech. There, they presented the project to members of the ESAT and their carers. Five people from the association then joined in the adventure.

Familiarization Session

The first session took place in April at the Varec’h Kayak Bretagne base. On the program: presentation of the structure, familiarization with the equipment, and exchanges between the high school students and future kayakers to get to know each other better.

Kayak Discovery Session

Two days after the familiarization session, the ESAT members returned to the base motivated for the second session. This provided the opportunity for a kayak outing. The trip took place over an hour in the Anse du Moustoir. Each pair of students took charge of a disabled person, from equipment to navigation.

All participants enjoyed the session! Indeed, they were able to take advantage of this activity in a maritime environment to discover the flora and fauna. In particular, they loved the way the kayaks glided over the water. Adapting communication methods was the key to creating a moment of sharing and conviviality.

The session ended with a feedback session over a snack.

👏 We’d like to thank the members of ESAT for their trust, and the students for their hard work.
