On Thursday, June 6, 2024, the Olympic Torch Relay traveled through the Morbihan region, stopping at Île-aux-Moines. The flame was lit at 5 p.m. at Pointe du Trec’h aboard the SNSM rescue boat. It then made its way to the Toulindag slipway on the island.

After reaching the island, the relay continued on land, passing through Bois d’Amour and the main beach (Plage du Dréhen). The stage ended at the port with various festivities, including a bagad performance, a godille race, a kayak gathering, and more.

Thanks to an invitation from the Morbihan Canoe-Kayak Departmental Committee, we had the privilege of taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay follow-up.

Wearing our official bibs, we set off in our single kayaks to accompany the event.

A wonderful shared experience

The Olympic Torch event on Île-aux-Moines was a fantastic opportunity to connect with local clubs. Kayakers from Vannes, Lanester, and the Ria d’Étel, among others, joined us at Varec’h Kayak. After a quick picnic on the slipway, we all took to the water, heading toward the northern tip of Île-aux-Moines. While waiting for the Olympic Torch Relay to arrive, we practiced forming patterns and demonstrations—kayak rosettes, circles, and more—designed to be visible from a drone or helicopter.

At exactly 5 p.m., the SNSM boats arrived, marking the start of the event. Collective boats (Canobus: Les Morganez and the Dragon Boat from Vannes) and some kayakers followed in the wake of the vessels carrying the flame, while others created a lively display near the port.
